<div id="mw-content-text" class="mw-body-content mw-content-ltr" lang="de" dir="ltr"><div class="mw-content-ltr mw-parser-output" lang="de" dir="ltr"><p>Das <b>Nibble</b> (selten auch <b>Nybble</b> oder <b>Nyble</b>) ist eine <a href="Datenmenge" title="Datenmenge">Datenmenge</a>, die im heutigen <a href="Sprachgebrauch" title="Sprachgebrauch">Sprachgebrauch</a> 4 <a href="Bit" title="Bit">Bits</a> umfasst; es wird auch <b>Halbbyte</b> genannt.<sup id="cite_ref-esr_1-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-esr-1"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>1<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> So wie ein <i><a href="Byte" title="Byte">Byte</a></i> jedoch traditionell nicht immer 8 Bits entsprach, wurde auch die Bezeichnung Nibble gelegentlich für verschiedene andere Teilmengen eines Bytes als 4 Bits benutzt.
</p><p>In der <a href="Telekommunikation" title="Telekommunikation">Telekommunikation</a> und Netzwerkindustrie hingegen sind die Bezeichnungen <i>Semi-<a href="Oktett_(Informatik)" title="Oktett (Informatik)">Oktett</a></i> (<i>semi-octet</i>, d. h. Halb-Oktett),<sup id="cite_ref-2" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-2"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>2<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> <i>Quadbit</i><sup id="cite_ref-3" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-3"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>3<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> oder <i>Quartett</i> (<i>quartet</i>)<sup id="cite_ref-4" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-4"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>4<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> geläufiger und bezeichnen immer exakt 4 Bit.

<p>Die Bezeichnung Nibble basiert auf dem englischen Verb <i>to nibble</i> („anknabbern“, „einen kleinen Bissen nehmen“) und der <a href="Semantik" title="Semantik">semantischen</a> Ähnlichkeit von <i>bite</i> („beißen“, „Bissen“) und <i>byte</i>. Das <a href="Wortspiel" title="Wortspiel">Wortspiel</a> „to nibble = to take half a bite“ hat seinen Ursprung offenbar um 1958 in einer scherzhaften Bemerkung von David B. Benson, einem späteren Professor der <a href="Washington_State_University" title="Washington State University">Washington State University</a>, gegenüber seiner Mutter, die Programmiererin im <a href="Los_Alamos_Scientific_Laboratory" class="mw-redirect" title="Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory">Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory</a> war.
</p><p>In Westeuropa wurden ein Nibble früher auch <i>Tetrade</i><sup id="cite_ref-5" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-5"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>5<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup><sup id="cite_ref-Speiser_1965_6-0" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-Speiser_1965-6"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>6<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> oder <i>Quadrupel</i> genannt.

<div class="mw-heading mw-heading2"><h2 id="Wertetabelle">Wertetabelle</h2></div>
<p>Die sechzehn Werte des Nibble umfassen den <a href="Zielmenge" title="Zielmenge">Wertebereich</a> von 0 (<a href="Bin%C3%A4rzahl" class="mw-redirect" title="Binärzahl">binär</a> <b>0000</b>) bis 15 (binär <b>1111</b>) und können mit den <a href="Hexadezimalsystem" title="Hexadezimalsystem">Hexadezimalziffern</a> von <b>0</b><sub>hex</sub> bis <b>F</b><sub>hex</sub> bezeichnet werden.
</p><p>Hier liegt auch der Grund für die „Verstoßung“ des <a href="Oktalsystem" title="Oktalsystem">Oktalsystems</a> mit den Ziffern 0<sub>okt</sub> bis 7<sub>okt</sub> (für jeweils drei Binärstellen) – vorderes und hinteres Halbbyte waren z. B. trotz Identität aufgrund der oktalen Zahlendarstellung nicht sofort als solche erkennbar:

<p>Die Hälfte eines Nibble wird auch <i>Crumb</i><sup id="cite_ref-7" class="reference"><a href="#cite_note-7"><span class="cite-bracket">[</span>7<span class="cite-bracket">]</span></a></sup> (englisch für <i>Brösel</i>) genannt. Ein Crumb umfasst also zwei Bits. Diese Bezeichnung ist aber sehr selten anzutreffen, weil Bits selten in Zweierblöcken dargestellt werden.
</p><p>Analog zur Bezeichnung <i>Tetrade</i> für 4 Bits waren früher auch folgende Bezeichnungen geläufig:
